Introduction to Beekeeping

honey bees 16We at the Caenhill Countryside Centre have many ideas and many requests to help people to achieve their own ideas.

One such area has been the interest in beekeeping for many.

In response to this, as requested, we are holding a dedicated course over 2 evenings in early August 2018

This course is compiled by a dedicated team at Caenhill Countryside Centre and headed up by our expert Beekeeper Graham Davison.

We aim to give an introduction to beekeeping on the first course date.

This is aimed at those who are curious to know about bees, honey, hives and more.

This will be followed by a second course date where you can learn a little more about the hive, its inhabitants and how to look after bees.

Our dedicated course will enable you to:

  • Be aware of  basic beekeeping techniques

  • Know and understand beekeeping equipment and management

  • Know what products can come from bee colonies

We shall cover the following topics through  the course:

  • Knowledge of the hive  The queen, workers and drones and their functions;

  • How to…  Equipment needed - how a hive should be set up  making a frame; tools and clothing;

  • Managing your hive - the beekeeping year;  feeding

  • Diseases and Pests - hygiene

  • Swarms - reasons for swarms
